This album of Beethoven and Schubert represents an abundance of pianistic and formal invention that would continue to bear fruit into the early twentieth-century. As both of these composers lives progressed, they wrote for the piano in a manner that pushed, and even exceeded, the limits of their contemporary instruments. In this album, Beethoven’s ultra-virtuosic and structurally audacious Hammerklavier Sonata in B flat Op. 106 is balanced with Schubert’s elusive and often tumultuous Sonata in A minor D. 784. To tie the album together is Schubert’s single variation on a Waltz by Anton Diabelli. This a small piece with which Beethoven also had some significant association through his monumental Op. 120 variations.

Composites
Listen here.
Composites is a project consisting of nine original piano compositions created in collaboration with multidisciplinary artist and musician Jack Vanzet (aka. Thrupence). The album's title, Composites, reflects the process that underpinned its creation. During the pandemic lockdowns, Jack and I exchanged short piano sketches, building on each other's ideas to produce something greater than the sum of our individual contributions. This collaborative approach informed the album's visual identity, which features nine unique artworks corresponding to each track.
